Since December 2015, TransOxford is the leading independent dedicated support group for the transgender and gender non-conforming people in Oxfordshire the number of which is currently estimated in excess of 5,000.
We are run entirely by the volunteers. We all know ‘first hand’ the problems associated with gender dysphoria, transition and post-transitional social integration of transgender people.
Our members come from all walks of life and benefit from an informal exchange of social and professional ideas, knowledge, expertise and experience in many fields, including personal confidence and development, social integration in a new gender role, legal, psychological and other aspects of living with their gender identity.
The group was created with three purposes in mind -
- to organise and hold regular monthly or fortnightly social meetings for the members of the local transgender community;
- to facilitate greater communication and interaction between the various smaller local transgender groups related to the two universities, churches, etc.;
- to get the local councils more involved and to establish with their help a regular venue and a dedicated telephone helpline for the local transgender people.
The group meets on first or second Tuesdays of the month with an occasional Friday evening.
TransOxford actively works together with the Oxford University LGBT groups, TAGS (transgender and gender non-confirming swimming group), local and neighbouring transgender groups - First Sunday Church Group, Oxford Pride, TransSwindon, R-Trans (Reading) and many others between London and Bristol.
TransOxford became also one of the founding members of the South East Transgender Alliance - an invitation only group for the transgender group organisers and activists in the South East of England.
